Sir, it has come to my knowledge that the former ‘unofficial’ approach of the police, namely not to intervene in matters of a private nature, has been reversed with the result that a large number of hard-working, honest, and otherwise law-abiding citizens have been placed in the most vulnerable position.
Potter added that ‘the situation is deteriorating hour by hour’. The most worrisome thing was that good individuals were now wide open to being blackmailed by criminal elements. ‘One such example is afforded by the case of Mr. Howard Graham Lindsay, a Crown Counsel in this Colony, who has within the last week been charged with four or five offences of gross indecency allegedly committed in the privacy of his own house.’
There was clear evidence, Potter said, that the same boys had threatened to blackmail Lindsay just days before the charges were made. Having refused to pay up, the innocent man had been reported to the police.
Potter noted what Lindsay had been told a week earlier: that ‘top people’ in the police and judiciary were about to be arrested. But nothing had happened. ‘As this action has not yet transpired, it is possible that it has been frustrated at a high level to avoid damage to the fabric of the Colony . . .’
As Potter went to post his letter, Lindsay phoned Elsie Elliott, asking for her help, and later dropped her a note with an outline of his concerns and a copy of Potter’s letter. As the day of his hearing approached, Lindsay wrote to Elliott, explaining that he was frustrated by the lack of balance in the situation. ‘I am simply interested in fairness, impartiality and consistency in the conduct of the authorities, and cannot understand the basis upon which certain people are selected for prosecution whilst other persons are allowed to avoid prosecution altogether,’ he wrote.
